How Williams Companies Improved Job Site Safety Using Limeade
Williams is an energy infrastructure leader that delivers 30% of the nation’s gas and employs more than 7,000 employees in the U.S. and Canada. It’s also FORTUNE Magazine’s #1 Most Admired U.S. Energy Company. But as a company pieced together by acquisitions and mergers, culture and adoption of corporate values varied across locations. A traditional wellness programme also caused disengagement due to a one-dimensional focus on physical health.
In 2011 a new CEO took charge. He created “One Williams – One Mission,” a call for all employees to actively engage in the Williams strategy and vision. He gave everyone a safety “coin” that represented core focus areas. And at the top was his highest priority — to get employees home safely each day.
The team saw its opportunity. The new programme needed to:
Tightly connect to the “One Williams” mission
Reach employees in-the-field including pipeline workers and truck drivers
Address the whole employee — not just physical health
Williams selected Limeade to help redesign Williams Way to Wellness, it’s mission-driven programme for improving employee health and well-being while supporting overall business success. Employees work in pipelines, drive on rugged terrain and manage construction projects, so the programme’s commitment to safety was paramount.
The team knew it needed buy-in from the safety team to be successful. Prior to programme launch, they joined the annual Williams safety summit to explain the connection between well-being and safety and share their vision for a cross-departmental partnership. The positive response was overwhelming. The VP of Safety agreed to sponsor programme challenges, safety team members volunteered as Programme Champions, and team leads agreed to spotlight a new challenge at every department meeting in 2015.
At programme launch, the team incorporated safety questions into the Well-Being Assessment. Results showed a strong understanding of the well-being/safety connection and that more than 90% of employees feel Williams supports their safety on the jobsite.
Throughout the year, the programme rewarded healthy behaviors that contributed to on-the-job safety, like stress-relief breaks, mindfulness and preventive care. The safety team also sponsored a “Drink Up” challenge encouraging employees to stay hydrated on the job.
Home and family safety Williams believes safety doesn’t end with the shift. It also knows employees are heavily influenced by spouses (and vice versa.) So they extended the programme’s safety focus beyond the workday with challenges ranging from daily precautions to creating disaster preparedness kits. This strategy demonstrated their genuine passion for keeping employees, spouses and families safe.
Reaching remote employees Employees in potentially dangerous work environments rely on mobile devices to access Williams Way to Wellness. They also need motivation to track progress during the busy work day. To address this the team designed challenges just for those in the field. “Healthy Places to Eat When Working Remote” helped workers find alternatives to nearby gas station food. And a “Distracted Driving” challenge provided techniques for staying focused during long periods behind the wheel.
Nine months after launching Williams Way to Wellness, more than 60% of eligible employees had joined the programme — a major victory considering the disengagement from the previous programme.
