Ever finished a workout only to realize you forgot your fitness tracker at home and didn’t track it? It’s an annoyance that was virtually nonexistent three years ago, yet today it’s something more than 75% of U.S. consumers can relate to.

Used by marathon trainers, school kids, social walkers and everyone in between, wearable devices have hit the mainstream by bringing gratification and big data to the fitness game. And it doesn’t stop with fitness. According to a recent study by the Pew Internet Research Project, 46 percent of those who track their health say it’s changed their overall approach to maintaining wellness.

What does this mean for businesses? To start, companies are integrating wearable devices into their wellness programs for effortless, automated engagement on a daily basis. These devices use data to empower employees to get and stay healthy – resulting in potentially lower healthcare costs and increased productivity for employers.

With a surge of device types and brands on the market, employers are challenged by adopting a program that provides freedom of choice, while also motivating employees through incentives offered for improved health and well-being. Many companies are turning to wellness platforms to help – enabling them to aggregate and manage data across multiple devices.
