Stress happens. And everyone feels it. Whether it’s pressure at work, problems at home or things not going your way, stress can creep up quickly without you even knowing. According to a study by the American Institute of Stress, the main causes of workplace stress stem from workload, people issues, juggling work with personal lives and lack of job security.
Feeling overwhelmed, overworked and overloaded can both mentally and physical harm your health. The American Psychological Association (APA) states that, “chronic stress may also cause disease, either because of changes in your body or the overeating, smoking and other bad habits people use to cope with stress.” According to APA’s 2012 Stress in America survey, stress keeps more than 40 percent of adults lying awake at night.
But stress doesn’t have to take control of your life or your health. With National Stress Awareness Month right around the corner, take the time to find the right solutions for your own personal and professional stress management — and tame workplace stress.
Here’s five simple tips to help manage and reduce your stress levels:
1. Put yourself first
When times get tough, it can be easy to put your health and well-being last. Practice self-care by allowing yourself the time during a busy week to relax, rewind and catch your breath. Focus on your wins for the week and celebrate the small things — a little positivity and self-care can go a long way.
2. Set boundaries
It can be tempting to say “yes” to every ask, but it’s empowering to say “no.” Set realistic boundaries for yourself so that you don’t overcommit and feel overwhelmed.
3. Monitor social media
Limit your time on social media. Use social media to keep up with friends and loved ones, but don’t get caught up in comparing your life to others. Every person has their own story and successes — you can’t compare your own journey to someone who lives a different life.
4. Eat for nutrition
Don’t ignore your physical health when you’re stressed. Take care of your body and make sure you’re not over- or under-eating. Eat foods that are good for you and that you enjoy!
5. Get up and move
Even if it’s just stretching in the mornings and evenings, take time to get up and move around. Any kind of movement throughout the day — even if it’s just taking a lap around the office — can have a direct impact on your health and happiness.
