When we look back at how this pandemic changed work, among the most significant impacts will be that the vital importance of caring for employee well-being came to the forefront. Yes, there have been workplace wellness programs for years, but they were largely tucked away in the corner or hidden within your benefits offering.

Then we all experienced firsthand that when we feel unsafe, unstable or otherwise unwell, we aren’t capable of doing our best work. Leaders finally realized that without well-being, people can never perform up to their potential. This insight changed work for good.

Our understanding of what impacts and interferes with work performance evolved throughout the pandemic. Closed schools and daycares upended people’s lives. And Zoom meetings provided a look into employee’s homes that revealed the complexity that they juggle every day just to show up. It became clear that the way we were working wasn’t really working for our people. Well-being provides the model we need to understand and fulfill the core needs of our people so that they are free to offer their best at work.

Managers have been at the frontlines of the effort to support well-being throughout the pandemic. They were tasked with keeping people safe, helping them feel connected and to get involved in their personal lives more than in the past. Caring for employee’s well-being effectively required managers to develop new skills in communication, empathy and even compassion. Along the way, these became the new core competencies of management.
