Supporting Employees in Knowing Their Worth and Crafting Their Purpose
By: The Limeade Team
Three of our Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) — Black LimeMates Kings & Queens (BLKQ), Developing Professionals and Limeade Womxn — teamed up to bring an interactive workshop to invest in our people.
Limeade welcomed Janelle King as a guest speaker to facilitate a session about knowing one’s value, identifying strengths and aligning one’s purpose. Janelle King is an entrepreneur, organizational consultant, and certified executive and leadership coach. It’s her mission to help organizations, teams, and people reimagine and redesign the way they do life and work. She currently lives out this mission through her consulting practice, Excel Leadership. where she combines the power of purpose with insights from a variety of psychological disciplines including organizational, vocational and positive psychology.
Finding Purpose and Crafting Meaningful Work
King facilitated a rich discussion and exercise that stemmed from identifying values in order to better integrate our talents and strengths, aligned to one’s purpose for crafting more meaningful work. Starting with gaining deeper self-awareness and what gets in our way, ignited rich discussion and insight for how to raise our level of consciousness to better know ourselves.
“I had an a-ha moment when she spoke on how distractions contribute to a lack of self-awareness. In this age of Zoom calls and working from home, there are little things that impact how you show up that you may not even realize. Are you working out of a messy room? Are your children trying to get your attention? Do you have the TV on? These are all things that can impact your ability to be engaged with what’s going on in front of you or slow down your progress…”
– Senior HR Leader, member of BLKQ and Limeade Womxn
King passionately and expertly reminded us that we all have value that’s unique and needed by the world and that it’s important to celebrate our accomplishments as part of defining or refining our value. She offered practical tools and tips along the way from values exercises, to coaching questions, and reflective exercises that fuel ongoing learning and growth no matter your life/career stage.
“The Developing Professionals ERG often talks about having courageous career conversations, and Janelle’s encouragement and methodology for identifying and owning one’s values was very empowering. I think even someone who’s sure of their values could benefit from this session, for the way it applies values a step further to job-crafting. Both Janelle’s thoughtful take-aways and candor throughout her session made this a very worthwhile workshop.”
– Strategic Account Executive, Leader of Developing Professionals and member of Limeade Womxn
“The intersectionality of this ERG meeting was great, providing valuable content and perspective for three different employee groups. Janelle did a great job of taking several overwhelming topics and breaking them down to digestible conversations with actionable takeaways for every person on the call.”
– Strategic Account Executive, member of Developing Professionals and Limeade Womxn ally
Meetings like this are the reason ERGs are so valuable to organizational culture. It demonstrates care by creating a safe space for difficult conversations, opportunities to learn and provides a sense of belonging.
Many companies see the benefit — for both the employee and employer — in providing well-being support for parents in the workplace, but supporting the whole person goes beyond flexible schedules and extra days off.
